added initial support in [4127].

This WILL BREAK all existing apps that uses static start page. This feature will enable real portal support. Check multiapp.html for details

Would it be possible to support also the old convention in order to keep it backwards compatible even in apps with static start page?

Everything is possible, but I believe using custom start pages are that rare that it is better not to pollute our code with backwards compatibility hacks. And it is very easy to convert to new model.
